type='text'>

You won't see anything much more clinical.

Manchester United picked apart a poor Boavista side on Tuesday night with a superb display of football at the Estadio do Bessa.

The game was all over at half-time, when Sir Alex Ferguson's men led 2-0 thanks to some awful defending by the home side.

Laurent Blanc could hardly believe his luck when David Beckham's corner found him completely unmarked just six yards out, and the French defender couldn't miss as he volleyed home.

While Beckham can take some of the praise for a corner of high quality, to be left unmarked like that was unbelievable.

And it wasn't much better from Boavista just before the half-hour mark.

As their defence came out one man – Pedro Emmanuel – stayed back, playing three United attackers onside.

United still needed a touch of fortune when Giggs' effort from close range was saved by Ricardo, as the ball bounced kindly for Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer who prodded home from about seven yards out.

But again, United were rewarded for having men forward in the first place.

If the match wasn't over by half-time, it was on 51 minutes.

A superb piece of play by Nicky Butt, who along with Silvestre was in brilliant form, set up Solskjaer, who in turn played in Paul Scholes.

When defenders have two attackers already to mark, Scholes' runs from deep are harder to pick up, and only a crude challenge by Mart
<img width='1' He was tackling ferociously, harrying opponents and then - just like Labant - delivered a fierce long-range drive just over the bar.

But if di Canio had a rival on the pitch for exquisite natural talent it was Beckham, and the England captain provided a memorable riposte on 17 minutes.

Joe Cole gave the ball away as he attempted an over- ambitious cross-field ball which was intercepted by Scholes.

He sent Beckham scurrying away down the right flank and, as David James came out, the midfielder nonchalantly lobbed him before celebrating wildly in front of the home fans who vilify him for leaving his East End roots.

It took the Hammers just two minutes to answer back.

Kanoute had already come close with one effort before he escaped the attentions of Ronny Johnsen to sweep home Sebastian Schemmel's low cross.

But in a mesmerising game, United hit back again little more than 60 seconds later.

This time, Beckham turned provider to deliver a free- kick which Butt headed home from close range.

With just 20 minutes gone, the scoreline was already 2-2 but the incredible tempo showed no immediate sign of letting up as both sides continued to charge headlong at each other.

Di Canio was still weaving his magic, tricking Neville into an ill-judged tackle that earned a booking and sending over a deep free- kick which Tomas Repka headed into the ground and narrowly over the bar.

United were nevertheless just as dangerous themselves, with Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer both coming close as the two defences struggled to cope.

While there were still mistakes aplenty, with even Roy Keane conceding the ball, both teams seemed to pause momentarily to catch their breath around the half-hour mark.

As the rain came down, United attempted to slow the game down in midfield by playing the possession game.

In doing so, they finally started to exert some measure of control.

Kanoute had a snap-shot which was off-target, while James scrambled away a carefully-placed drive by Keane and both sides walked off to rapturous applause at the interval.

HT West Ham 2 Manchester United 2

One of the most surprising aspects of the first-half was that amid the frantic goalmouth action, United's prolific scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy hardly rated a mention.

West Ham midfielder Cole was meanwhile also struggling to impose himself in front of the watching England coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson, and looked to be carrying a knock.

With the rain now teeming down - and even the West Ham mascots bizarrely carrying umbrellas - di Canio was now also rather more subdued.

And while Carrick's ambitious long-range effort flew wide, United seized the lead on 55 minutes with little prior warning.

Solskjaer looked to pose minimal danger on the byline but managed to evade the attentions of Repka and Nigel Winterburn as he cut the ball back for the unmarked figure of Scholes to convert from close range.

West Ham's defence were now being far too easily pulled apart by United on the break, with van Nistelrooy finally having his first meaningful effort and seeing the ball fly just past the post.

And with 63 minutes gone, they self-destructed completely in allowing a farcical fourth goal to the visitors.

Beckham's inswinging cross caused the danger and James failed to cut out the ball as first van Nistelrooy and then Solskjaer threatened before the Norwegian striker finally converted his second shot from a tight angle.

Only James's superb reactions saved his side moments later when Keane latched onto another cross by Beckham and the United captain came agonisingly close a second time only for the ball to slip wide of the post.

With 12 minutes left, West Ham gave themselves fresh hope as Jermain Defoe, who had struck the winner at Old Trafford in December, converted Kanoute's cross just four minutes after coming on as a substitute.

West Ham launched a passionate assault on United's goal as the crowd bayed for an equaliser, but the final twist was appropriately provided by Beckham.

Referee Mark Halsey deemed that Repka had brought down Scholes in the penalty area and Beckham converted the spot-kick with aplomb to secure a memorable victory.

Colin McRae

ad news for the Pirelli shod teams who were hoping for rain there are clear blue skies above Ajaccio this morning, and no rain has been forecast for the days. However there are still some very damp patches along the route that today's third leg follows, which means once again tyre choice is going to be very crucial.

The third and final leg began with the 24.2km long Pénitencier Coti Chiavari - Pietra Rossa stage. This Tour of Corsica classic begins with a narrow, twisty climb. The road eventually becomes wider and very fast. Racing lines guaranteed. The stage finishes with a number of extremely tight hairpin bends.

In spite of initial fears from the Pirelli shod teams that they would lose out to those using Michelin tyres it was Colin McRae who claimed the first victory of the day, completing the stage in a time of 15:11.1. His time moves him into fourth place overall relegating Philippe Bugalski, who was 22 seconds slower through the stage, into fifth place.

Peugeot's Richard Burns, who remains in third place, was second quickest, while Petter Solberg and Carlos Sainz were tied for the third best time. Solberg, Subaru's sole remaining driver, stays in seventh place just behind Sainz in sixth. The gap between the two drivers fighting for the last points scoring position is just four seconds, while Bugalski in fifth in three seconds ahead of Sainz.

Marcus Gronholm was fifth quickest and retains his second place, 41 seconds behind his Peugeot teammate Gilles Panizzi who is leading the rally. Francois Duval was sixth quickest, ahead of Panizzi, Markko Martin and Harri Rovanpera. Mitsubishi's Francois Delecour once again made it into the top ten in tenth place.

Armin Schwarz was the quicker of Hyundai's two drivers in eleventh place after coming home 19 seconds behind Colin McRae, while Toni Gardemeister was Skoda's best driver for the stage. They are ninth and 15th respectively.

The unstoppable Ruud van Nistelrooy Posted by Barry on Fri Mar 08 @ 07:20:45 GMT

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been voted Barclaycard Player of the Month for February – a month that saw the Dutch master hit the back of the net five times.

Like Roy Keane, I am fast running out of superlatives for van Nistelrooy. Quite simply, I have never seen anything like him in a striker before in all my time watching United – he is that good. He is the striker with everything – he can use both feet, he can head, he can hold the ball up, he can link play and his work rate is phenomenal.

When we think of all the great players the Wizard has brought to this club, Ruud must already feature high in that list. I would go as far as to say that he is probably in the top six of signings Fergie has made, and to say that of a player yet to complete a season at the club, is special.

Last night, Ruud bagged another two goals, taking his tally to 32 for the season – 21 in the Premiership, 8 in the Champions League, two in the FA Cup and one in the Charity Shield. He is the first United player in fourteen years to have scored over twenty league goals and thirty in all competitions.

Of all the thirty-two goals Ruud has scored in a red shirt so far I enjoyed last nights the most. I loved the way he took control of the ball, outwitted a couple of Tottenham defenders, turned and casually picked his spot before despatching the ball into the back of the net in the style of someone who had all the time in the world.

The highest compliment I can pay Ruud is that the only reason he won't get my vote as United's Player of the Year for this season, is that his team mate and captain is currently the best player in the world.

Oh, and for the record, this is who I believe are the best six signings the Wizard has ever made, in alphabetical order:

Bruce, Steve
Cantona, Eric
Irwin, Denis
Keane, Royston Maurice
Schmeichel, Peter
Van type='text'>

Ferguson agrees new three-year United dealPosted by Bill on Wed Feb 27 @ 09:20:39 GMT

Sir Alex Ferguson has signed a new three-year contract with Manchester United. The 60-year-old had intended to retire when his current contract ends this summer. He then approached the club earlier this year with a view to extending his stay.

After three weeks of negotiations, United's most successful manager has put pen to paper on a new contract which keeps him until June 30, 2005. Ferguson joined United in 1986 as successor to Ron Atkinson but struggled to turn around the club's fortunes.

However, with speculation mounting over his future at Old Trafford, a late goal from Lee Martin won the FA Cup in 1990 after a replay. That initial success started the ball rolling and in 1993 Ferguson finally ended a 26-year title drought by bringing the Premiership title to Old Trafford and followed that up with a league and cup double the following year.

But Ferguson's finest hour came in 1999 when United captured an unprecedented treble of Premiership title, FA Cup and European Cup, earning the Scot a knighthood. Soon after guiding United to the Premiership title in 2000, Ferguson announced his intention to move 'upstairs' at the end of the 2001-2002 season.

Laurent Blanc said: 'He probably became aware that he was about to make a big mistake in leaving and his motivation to fight came back."
http://www.ananova.com

5-1 to the Reds who will stop us..................

You can mail your comments here gtir@gtri67.freeserve.co.uk

Hi welcome to my Blog,it will be about anything i can think of too bore you with....
