Houllier: United Will Definitely Win
Date: Wednesday, 10th April 2002 - 13:23 GMT

Gerard Houllier is convinced Manchester United can go on and overcome Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

His assessment regarding their chances against Leverkusen was brief and to the point. "They will definitely win," he said in the aftermath of Liverpool's extraordinary defeat on Tuesday night.

You won't see anything much more clinical.

Manchester United picked apart a poor Boavista side on Tuesday night with a superb display of football at the Estadio do Bessa.

The game was all over at half-time, when Sir Alex Ferguson's men led 2-0 thanks to some awful defending by the home side.

Laurent Blanc could hardly believe his luck when David Beckham's corner found him completely unmarked just six yards out, and the French defender couldn't miss as he volleyed home.

While Beckham can take some of the praise for a corner of high quality, to be left unmarked like that was unbelievable.

And it wasn't much better from Boavista just before the half-hour mark.

As their defence came out one man – Pedro Emmanuel – stayed back, playing three United attackers onside.

United still needed a touch of fortune when Giggs' effort from close range was saved by Ricardo, as the ball bounced kindly for Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer who prodded home from about seven yards out.

But again, United were rewarded for having men forward in the first place.

If the match wasn't over by half-time, it was on 51 minutes.

A superb piece of play by Nicky Butt, who along with Silvestre was in brilliant form, set up Solskjaer, who in turn played in Paul Scholes.

When defenders have two attackers already to mark, Scholes' runs from deep are harder to pick up, and only a crude challenge by Mart

A.Word.A.Day--uriah heep

Uriah Heep (ur-AYAH heep) noun

A hypocritical person.

[After Uria Heep, a character in Charles Dickens's David Copperfield.]

You can read David Copperfield online at: http://www.online-literature.com/dickens/copperfield/

"This affair shows the accounting profession all too often to be in bed with the oldest profession. Accounting standards have been frequently prostituted by the new Uriah Heeps: these are executives in ever-merging firms afraid to challenge their clients' phony numbers and secret self-dealing because they might lose fees in the lucrative consulting business they run on the side." William Safire, Where's Scandal in Enron? The New York Times, Jan 14, 2002.

There are thousands and thousands of them. In medicine, botany, chemistry, athletics, and other walks (and runs) of life. We use them all the time without even realizing it. They come with a whole story about themselves. They are words derived from people, real and fictional, from history and from mythology. They are known as eponyms and this week's we'll meet five of these people and the words they gave us after their names. -Anu
